What would you do if you saw a neighbor’s home burning to the ground? Imagine the smell of burned belongings and memories. Picture your neighbor’s worried family standing in the middle of the street, watching as flames destroy all they own . . .
Can you imagine what’s going through their minds? Where will they sleep? What about food and clothes? What should they do? Who can they call?
Wouldn’t you want to do all you could to help them? That is exactly how the Triangle Red Cross feels every time we respond to a house fire or other area disaster.
Twenty-four hours a day . . . 7 days a week . . . 365 days a year . . . the American Red Cross is on hand to help our neighbors whenever we’re needed.
Most Americans are familiar with major disasters the Red Cross responds to, like the cyclone in Myanmar, the earthquake in China and the floods and tornados that devastated Iowa, Nebraska and other parts of the Midwest last year.
But many people aren’t as familiar with how the Red Cross helps out when disasters occur in our own backyard, right here in Triangle.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, nearly 5,000 Americans die each year in fires, and 80 percent of those deaths result from home fires. Additionally, 4 out of 5 Americans are unaware that home fires arethe most common threat.
Every year, we are moved by the support of people like you, who make it possible for the Red Cross to assist those whose lives are devastated by fires and other tragedies. We’re hoping this year will be no exception.
During October’s Fire Safety Month, won’t you please send a gift to Triangle Red Cross. All gifts, no matter their size, will enable us to continue helping area men, women and children prepare for and respond to fires and other disasters when they occur. Please help your neighbors in need — whether they live across the street, around the block or on the other side of town — by supporting your American Red Cross today.
Whatever the need . . . whenever we’re called . . . the American Red Cross will be there. A gift from you, no matter what size, will enable us to continue offering much-needed assistance to people who unexpectedly find their lives, homes and dreams torn apart.
Thank you for caring for your neighbors.

A disaster is a chaotic scene:
There are burned-out homes, firefighters, police officers, crying victims, frightened children, confused pets, concerned neighbors and news media. And that’s just in the first 15 minutes.
Last spring a fire destroyed the Hamilton’s home. Thankfully, everyone in the house escaped without injury.
The Hamiltons lost many of their belongings that night. In the fire’s aftermath, the Red Cross offered the family money for clothes, food and a place to stay. “I am very grateful for the Red Cross and everyone that helped our family.
The kindness we experienced was incredible. It really touched us,” Mrs. Hamilton wrote in a letter to the Red Cross. “We’re thankful the Red Cross was there to help us cope and start on the road to recovery.”
