Volunteer Services
The American Red Cross is able to provide services to the community only because of volunteers. They are the direct link between the type and amount of service that the Red Cross is able to deliver. Descriptions of volunteer opportunities available are listed below. Once you decide there is a volunteer opportunity that interests you, just sign up for a Volunteer Orientation held twice each month.

DISASTER SERVICES: Disaster Services volunteers serve on disasters nationally or locally in Wake, Franklin, Warren, Lee, Chatham and Johnston counties. They set up and run shelters, conduct feeding operations, perform comprehensive damage assessment surveys, and provide recovery assistance to both those affected by disaster and emergency workers. BLOOD SERVICES: Volunteers are needed to assist the blood donors as greeters and in the canteen.
Greeter
This volunteer position plays a vital role and is the initial contact to our blood centers and bloodmobiles. As a receptionist, you will be responsible for greeting our donors and registration, updating schedules for appointments, instructing donors on the computer or manual registration and maintaining the donor flow chart.
Canteen
Volunteers will assist the donors in the “Canteen” area of the blood center and bloodmobile. Responsibilities include: greeting the donor; helping them after they have given a blood donation; serving food and drink and watching the donors for reactions to the blood collection and alerting the collection staff.
HEALTH & SAFETY: Volunteers are needed to provide first aid coverage at public events throughout the community, to teach Lifesaving courses. Health & Safety volunteer opportunities require certification in Basic CPR/First Aid.
First Aid/CPR Instructor
Instructors may choose to teach from five different courses. In order to enroll in the First Aid/CPR Instructor course, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:
1. Minimum age of 17
2. Each volunteer will attend the Fundamentals of Instructor Training, followed by the specialized instructor course in the class you wish to teach. Babysitting instructor course is a self-study.
First Aid Station Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to provide first aid coverage at public events throughout the community. Two major events are the North Carolina State Fair and First Night, Raleigh’s New Year’s Eve celebration. Required training in CPR/First Aid.
Data Entry Volunteer
This volunteer opportunity position helps support office administrative functions by entering student information from the course record, and generating certification cards. Other functions such as filing are also needed.
ADMINISTRATIVE: Volunteers are needed Monday-Friday, hours varied between 8:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. at the Red Cross Headquarters at 100 N. Peartree Lane, to help with daily office duties, data entry, preparation of direct mail and general office work. Special events volunteers will assist in organizing the event, set-up and decorations, creating and distributing flyers, soliciting auction items and sponsors, and executing the actual event'
FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT: Volunteers are needed Monday-Friday, hours varied between 8:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. at the Red Cross Headquarters at 100 N.
